Woodwind Studies

Woodwind students at Utah Tech University have many opportunities to be involved. In addition to Band (Symphonic, Jazz, Pep, Marching) and Symphony Orchestra, Woodwind Chamber groups such as Flute Choir and Saxophone Ensemble offer focused woodwind performance. The music department is committed to preparing students with the tools necessary to function as a musician in the performance hall, in the classroom, or for their own enjoyment. All UT instrumental ensembles are open to students across campus.

Utah Tech University offers several music degrees: a Bachelor of Music in Performance, Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Music, Bachelor of Science in Music Education. Bachelor of Arts or Science in Integrated Studies – Music Emphasis and Minor in Music. Students in these degree programs have a skilled woodwind faculty to work with. Private instruction for credit is offered to all music and non-music major students.   Students enrolled in woodwind ‘major-level’ private lessons meet in a weekly performance class where they learn to critique one another and refine their performance and listening skills.

Scholarships are available from the Utah Tech University Music Department and are available to all students. Music and scholarship auditions are held in January and February, by appointment. Woodwind audition requirements include A) two contrasting solo or etude selections demonstrating your technical and lyrical playing ability, B) A full-range chromatic scale (ascending and descending), and C) two major and two minor scales of your choice (two-octave range is preferred).
