As one of the premier music programs in the state of Utah, the nationally-accredited Utah Tech University Music Department has produced highly-successful music graduates in the fields of music performance, education, composition, music business, and many other areas.   String studies at UT offer students the opportunity to study with dynamic teachers who are internationally distinguished performers and musicians, as well as experienced educators whose priority is students’ individual growth and success.  UT has one of the smallest teacher-student ratios among universities in the Southwest, where students receive personalized attention, get to express themselves and stand out.  Through one-on-one applied lessons, weekly studio and master classes, ensembles and other music classes, string students bond together like a family in the joint pursuit of excellence on their instruments.

The music department is committed to preparing students with the tools necessary to function as a musician in the performance hall, in the classroom, or for their own enjoyment. Utah Tech University offers several music degrees: a Bachelor of Music in Performance, Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Music, Bachelor of Science in Music Education. Bachelor of Arts or Science in Integrated Studies – Music Emphasis and Minor in Music.

String students play in the University Orchestra that has a reputation as one of the great university orchestras in Utah as well as the Southwestern United States.  The orchestra performs a variety of literature from 17th through the 21st centuries each season and is comprised of the top musicians on campus.  Chamber Music has a central role in the music curriculum at Utah Tech University.  String Chamber Music at UT offers a focused setting for extensive study of the standard chamber music literature for strings as well as for strings in mixed ensembles.  Music minors and non-majors are welcome to take applied lessons, perform in chamber music ensembles, and play in the orchestra.

With more than 300 days of sunshine and an average yearly temperature in the mid-70s, the beautiful location of St. George offers the perfect backdrop for your college adventure with endless outdoor recreation opportunities and engaging campus events.  Whether you are coming from Utah or out of state, our tuition is one of the most affordable in the Western United States.  Scholarships are available from the Utah Tech University Music Department.  These scholarships are not limited to music majors. Any student may apply.  Each year, string students are strong candidates for our academic, talent, and orchestra scholarships.  Music and scholarship auditions are scheduled for January and February, and by appointment.  String audition requirements include two contrasting solo selections demonstrating your ability on your individual instrument, and a major and a minor scale in three octaves (two octaves for double bass).
