KateLyn Syphus, an accomplished violinist, pianist, and private music teacher, has been personally involved with music since the age of 7. Her earliest years were spent learning the piano. When she turned 12 years old, she picked up the violin and has stuck with both instruments throughout her musical career. She graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from Dixie State University in 2014, where she studied violin performance under Dr. Paul Abegg. She is currently a Master’s Degree Candidate for a Master’s of Art in Arts Administration degree from Southern Utah University, where she is on track to graduate in the fall of 2019.
KateLyn’s performing career began in her youth when she participated in the Davis County Youth Symphony, the Davis County Youth Select Orchestra, and the Utah Youth Symphony Orchestra. She found herself in leadership positions in many of these capacities and since then her love for collaborative music has driven her career. As a soloist she won the Salute to Youth concerto competition with the Southwest Symphony. During her undergraduate studies she participated in countless ensembles including the Dixie State Symphony Orchestra (Concertmaster), the Southwest Symphony (Associate Concertmaster), the Dixie State Chamber Orchestra (Concertmaster), the Tuacahn Amphitheater Pit Orchestra, and the Harborwood String Quartet. She also participated in various pit orchestras, chamber ensembles and solo recitals at DSU. While in school KateLyn attended Brevard Music Festival in Brevard, North Carolina and the Symphony Orchestra Academy of the Pacific in British Columbia, Canada.
KateLyn has performed with many world class musicians including Yo-Yo Ma, Wayne Newton, Mannheim Steamroller, Celtic Woman, Jenny Oaks Baker, Kurt Bestor, William Joseph, Sutton Foster, and Matthew Morrison. She has also done recordings with several local artists, and performs regularly with her husband Shaun, a pianist.
KateLyn’s teaching career began in 2009, and since then she has taught over a hundred students private and group lessons. Aside from her regular teaching appointment, she also adjudicates festivals and solo and ensemble events in the state of Utah. She is a certified substitute teacher in Davis County, Utah and works with their musical ensembles regularly.
KateLyn is currently performing regularly with the Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square, freelancing, and teaching . When she isn’t doing music, she pursues her hobby of hand lettering and digital art. She resides in Northern Utah with her husband and two sons. Their family enjoys eating out, spending time outdoors hiking and biking, and watching home renovation shows.
