Symphony Band MUSC 3310

This course is a performing ensemble for all interested musicians with instrumental or band experience in high school as well as for students with an emphasis in music. This course is a participation type class and provides the student experience in a large ensemble where they are able to practice their instrument while working on the fundamentals of ensemble playing (tone quality, balance, blend, dynamics, etc.) as well as the more advanced concepts of good musicianship (phrasing, rhythms, sight reading, interpretation, etc.). The course also exposes the student to the standard band repertoire as well as the more recent or contemporary literature. Course may be repeated for credit. Jazz Ensemble MUSC 3330

This course is for the instrumental musician with an interest or emphasis in the study and performance of jazz music. Students in this ensemble should have some previous experience in this medium as well as have a basic understanding of improvisation. Exposes the student to various styles of music including swing, Latin, rock and ballads through the medium of the “big band” (5 saxes, 5 trumpets, 5 trombones, piano, bass, drums, guitar). Course of study includes sight reading, improvisation, and performance. May be repeated for credit. Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in MUSC 1310, Wind Ensemble. Audition may be necessary. Brass Ensemble MUSC 4432

For brass musicians seeking a small ensemble performance experience stressing the elements of good performance preparation: intonation, balance, blend, and tone production in a constant effort to increase musicality while surveying a wide range of repertoire in order to gain awareness of small ensemble performance techniques, and rehearsal skills. Groups are required to meet two hours each week: one hour for rehearsal as an ensemble and one hour with faculty for a coaching lesson. Public performances required. Repeatable up to 8 credits subject to graduation restrictions. Prerequisite: Instructor permission. Corequisite: MUSC 3310. FA, SP

Woodwind Ensemble MUSC 4431-01

Flute Ensemble MUSC 4431-02

Varsity/Pep Band MUSC 1320

A performing ensemble for any interested instrumental musician who has previous experience in high school bands or the equivalent. Teaches the fundamentals of good ensemble playing through “Pop” band music and class participation. Required to perform at all home football and basketball games. Students may be remunerated for their service in this ensemble. No audition required. Repeatable up to 8 credits subject to graduation restrictions. Prerequisite: Instructor permission. Concert Choir, MUSC 3250

Large choral performing ensemble open to students interested in musical enrichment as well as students pursuing a Music major. The student will develop advanced concepts of good choral singing including balance, blend, intonation, tone, and interpretation while experiencing a wide variety of musical styles from the Renaissance to the twentieth century (classical and popular styles). Students will actively participate in regular rehearsals and public performances. No audition required. Repeatable up to 8 credits subject to graduation restrictions. FA, SP

Chamber Singers, MUSC 3270

A small ensemble choral music experience designed for singers of a more advanced ability than MUSC 1250. The student will develop advanced concepts of good choral singing including balance, blend, intonation, tone and interpretation through appropriate small ensemble literature from the Renaissance to the twentieth century (classical and popular styles). Students will actively participate in regular rehearsals and public performances by the Chamber Singers. Fulfills elective credits and may be repeated for credit.

Women’s Chorus, MUSC 3280

This selected chorus is designed for female singers with advanced choral music experience. The student will develop singing skills through rehearsals and performances of appropriate musical literature from Medieval to vocal jazz. Fulfills elective credits and may be repeated for credit.

Dixie State Symphony Orchestra MUSC 3350

Performing ensemble for all interested student musicians with previous instrumental orchestra or band experience, including woodwinds, brass, strings, and percussion. Students will develop sight-reading, rehearsal, and public performance skills as well as knowledge of and appreciation of the symphonic literature of the 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th-century composers. No audition required. Repeatable up to 8 credits subject to graduation restrictions.

String Chamber Music MUSC 4430

For string musicians desiring study in instrumental chamber ensembles such as string trios, quartets, quintets, and sextets. Emphasis on basic repertoire, small ensemble performance techniques, and rehearsal skills. Students should be concurrently enrolled in private string lessons. Piano Ensemble and Accompanying, MUSC 4433

The Piano Ensemble and Accompanying course is designed for pianists seeking a small ensemble performance experience. Students will learn accompanying skills in vocal and instrumental literature. Students will also learn and perform ensemble music for one/two pianos and four/eight hands. Classes are spent in rehearsal and development for performances. Students who successfully complete this course will gain a great awareness of small ensemble rehearsal techniques and performance.
