Debbie Thornton is the Director of String Studies for Hurricane High School, Hurricane Middle School, and the Early Morning Elementary String Program, which includes students from Hurricane Elementary, La Verkin Elementary, Three Falls Elementary, and Coral Canyon Elementary.
Mama T, (as her students loving her call her) has been teaching orchestra in the Hurricane area for over twenty-five years. Her program has grown from a humble beginning of six students in the Elementary program and four students in the Middle School program, to over two hundred and eighty students currently enrolled in orchestra. Her students have received high honors at performances at SUPAF, Region and State Orchestra, Region Solo and Ensemble, and All-State Orchestra. In addition to her teaching in the public school, she also maintains a private teaching studio.
Mrs. Thornton has been a clinician for Honor Orchestra throughout the state, and has been an adjudicator for Region Solo and Ensemble, and Region Orchestra for other Region Festivals in the state. She is on the faculty of Castle Rock Summer String Camp held at Dixie State University, and she is director of Tiger Fiddle Camp held each summer at Hurricane High School. Mrs. Thornton has been an active member of Southwest Symphony for twenty years.
Mrs. Thornton is a graduate of Southern Utah University and recently completed her Master’s Degree from Southern Utah University in Education. She is happily married to her best friend, Jim Thornton. They have five children and nine grandchildren.
