Scholarships

Scholarships are available from the Dixie State University Music Department.

These scholarships are not limited to music majors. Any student may apply. Scholarships are available for instrumentalists and vocalists.

Brass, woodwind, and percussion students should consider applying for orchestra scholarships as well and band scholarships.

Steps To Apply For Scholarship

Brass and Woodwind Scholarships

The audition for a scholarship in instrumental music will consist of:

  • Complete the application for the Talent Scholarship Application.
  • A recording of the student’s performance of one solo learned during the current year in high school
  • An excerpt from a band or orchestra composition from the student’s current high school band or orchestra repertoire.
    The recording must also include a few major and minor scales or scale-type exercises or etudes. The above requirements should demonstrate:

    • Good tone
    • Sense of rhythm and tempo
    • Technique
    • Overall musicianship

The student may audition in person and expect to perform the audition as described above.
If a recording is sent, be sure that it is clearly identified with the student’s name, address and phone number. Also, please identify the composer and title of solos and excerpts.

Orchestra & String Scholarships

String Auditions Requirements:

Violin, Viola & Cello

Two contrasting solo selections demonstrating your ability on your individual instrument,
 a major and a minor 3-octave scale in 8th notes – quarter note = 60 bpm.

Double Bass

Two solo selections demonstrating your ability on your individual instrument
, a 2-octave major and minor scale in 8th notes – quarter note = 60 bpm.

Auditions will last around fifteen minutes. Memorization is strongly encouraged. Piano accompaniment is optional but if used must be provided by candidate. It is recommended that you schedule a live audition but recorded auditions will also be considered.

Choral & Vocal Scholarships

The audition for a scholarship in choral and vocal music will consist of:

  • The student’s performance of two songs in different musical style (for example, an Italian art song and a piece from a musical theater)
  • Vocal exercises (Vocal range)
  • Sight singing

A recording may be sent in lieu of the personal audition. It must contain the solo described above and the following unaccompanied exercises:

  • A major scale (sung on any neutral syllable, starting on any comfortable pitch)
  • Major and minor triads (start on the same pitch as the scale)

Be sure that the tape is clearly identified with the student’s name, address, and phone number. Also, please identify the composer and title of solo.

Percussion Scholarships

Brass and woodwind scholarships

The audition for percussion scholarships will consist of the following:

  • Snare Drum etude
  • A selection on keyboards: marimba, vibes, or xylophone
  • An example of timpani performance

Percussion auditions should take place on the DSU campus.

A recording may be sent in lieu of the personal audition. It must contain the solo described above.

Piano Scholarships

Piano Scholarships

Piano scholarship audition requirements:

  • Perform two memorized pieces from contrasting periods (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, or Twentieth/Twenty-first Century)
  • Sight read intermediate level literature (i.e., Clementi Sonatina)
  • Fluency in major and minor scales and arpeggios

It is recommended that you schedule a live audition, however, recorded auditions will also be considered. If a recording is sent, be sure that it is clearly identified with your name, address and phone number. Also, please identify the composer and title of each piece.
